Is it Worth Leaving a Traditional Used Car Dealership and Going to Used Auto Auctions Instead?

Recently, due to the recession and an economic slump, a lot of people have started going in for used cars instead of getting a brand new car out of a dealership. There are two ways in which you can get your hands on a used car- firstly, you can go to a traditional dealership that deals with sale of used cars and secondly, you can visit one of the many used auto auctions. There are a number of myths surrounding these auctions and people usually feel that it is safer for them to go to a dealership instead. You would, however, be surprised to know that most dealers dealing with used cars actually get a lot of their inventory from such auctions itself and sell those vehicle at 50% to 75% higher rates than they had actually purchased it. Yes, if you are paying 90% less than the anticipated market value of a vehicle at an auction, you can expect some malfunction, but it would be worth the risk and usually, the vehicles run just fine.

Although, it is a known fact that you are safer while dealing with a legitimate dealer, but, there have been instances when the cars purchased with dealers also have some sort of defects with them. At the auctions, on the other hand, you can never be sure of the running condition of the vehicle as you are not allowed to test drive the vehicle before you choose to bid on it. Vehicle are sold on an as-in basis. You might come across a vehicle that would have no physical damages, but the engine would be wrecked. On the other hand, you might face a totally wrecked vehicle on the outside, but with a perfect engine. It is elementary therefore, that you know a wee bit about cars. It is also important that you have the ability to judge the running condition of the vehicle, just by looking at it.

One of the biggest reasons that personally prompt me to go in for used auto auctions to purchase vehicles is the fact that it is not necessarily true that you end up buying an old vehicle at such an auction. With a dealership, you are sure about the fact that the vehicle you are testing and interested in, is actually used and old, whereas, this is not the case with used car auctions.
