Jump in the Car and Go

Nowadays, if you suddenly feel the urge to want to get in your car and drive to Timbucktu, you have to think twice about it. Despite the fact that gas has seen a significant decrease over the past few months, there is speculation as well as new evidence to suggest that gas prices will be on the rise again. Already, people are starting to see the price of gas increase at various gas stations in their area. For many, this constant surge of up and down in the gas prices is wreaking havoc in their lives as they can never be sure from day to day whether or not they'll be able to afford gas. Add to this the ever-increasing worry that most of us have over the lack of job security, and suddenly you've created the perfect storm of things that can go wrong.

Currently the price of oil is around $40 a barrel. However, we are still spending well over what we should at the pump. In some places, people are spending upwards of $2 a gallon for gasoline. Granted, this is still significantly better than where we were months ago when gasoline was costing consumers well over $4 a gallon, but are we really heading back in that direction? The big name auto dealers such as Ford, Chrysler and GM are feeling the effects of a much slower economy as their prices and stock has dropped significantly. These companies pleaded for a bailout from the government, but this desperate act upset many Americans who felt like the auto companies should have been allowed to fail. With less people purchasing cars and perhaps even less people driving around due to increased gas costs, you have to wonder how this affects the day-to-day lives of so many who, in the past, wouldn't have hesitated to plan an impromptu trip to the beach or the mountains for the weekend. Instead, we are parking our vehicles in the driveway and dusting off our bicycles to run errands. No doubt, this increased concern over the failing auto industry and ridiculous gasoline prices have forced many of us to think of more creative, energy-efficient ways to get around from place to place, which may (in the long run) not be such a bad thing after all. As for the price of gas, only time will tell what will happen.

The media has already begun hinting at the fact that we can expect to see gas prices increase. I guess the question that so many of us are now thinking, however, is "Why?" Why is it that gas prices are set to increase if the price of oil is the lowest that it has ever been? Frustrated, angry Americans are blaming a greedy government while others simply sigh as they try to figure out how to arrange their funds in their dwindling checking accounts so that they can afford to drive to and from work over the next month. And while they may be thankful to have a job to drive to, is the cost superseding their actual paycheck?
